Sofie Zuluaga is a smart, beautiful second grader at Lewisville Elementary School. She enjoys reading, writing, art, and playing the piano. On November 16, 2011, Sofie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Wilms' Cancer. This is a childhood cancer that originates in the kidneys. When discovered, the cancerous tumor found in Sofie's kidney had already begun to spread to her other organs, including her lungs. Therefore, she needed an aggressive treatment plan, including the removal of her right kidney, radiation , and chemotherapy.
Sofie first had surgery to place a port-o-cath in her upper left chest area. This was the device her body used to receive all chemotherapy, as well as the port used for blood withdrawals during constant monitoring of her counts. She next had surgery to remove the kidney itself, which was the site of the primary tumor, as well as the adrenal gland, her appendix, and all the surrounding lymph nodes. She then received 10 months of chemotherapy, both of which destroyed the cancerous cells remaining in her body.
Sofie successfully fought her cancer and was declared cancer-free on August 6th, 2012. Sadly, Sofie has relapsed. On her May 28th, 2013 scan, a large tumor was found in Sofie's right lung. The return of her cancer is very sad for Sofie and her family (As well as her Triad Pink Heals family). Her treatment plan includes two cycles of strong chemo, followed by the removal of the tumor.
This will all happen during the summer of 2013.
